Tries to answer the question of how much acoustic quartet we need at all and to what point do we deal with this classical royal setup, seeing on the stage a tangle of cables connecting electric midi string instruments with computers, synthesizers and loopers?

There Are No Longer Binary Machines

Performers:
Helsinki Chamber Choir
NeoQuartet

Program:
Galina Grigorjeva – Alleluia
Julia Wolfe – Guard my tongue
Beat Furrer – enigma III
Olli Moilanen – Luoto (world premiere)
Balázs Kecskés D. – Komm

In performances at the NeoArte Festival in Gdańsk the Helsinki Chamber Choir and NeoQuartet will explore a world in which long-accepted truths can no longer be trusted. From the spiritual music of Ukrainian-born Galina Grigorjeva and Julia Wolfe’s post-minimalist exhortation not to bear false witness through the nightmarish visions of Beat Furrer’s enigma III, we arrive at Komm, a work by the young Hungarian composer Balázs Kecskés D. exploring new and constantly shifting worldviews and the looming sense of crisis that these can create. Olli Moilanen’s new work examines humans’ symbiotic relationship with nature and conjures up ways in which we can connect more fundamentally with our environment.

Sven Helbig – Skills

Performers:
Sven Helbig – electronics, NeoQuartet, Hornet Quartet

The German composer and instrumentalist Sven Helbig is a figure perfectly recognizable on the modern classical scene. The artist is known for his cooperation with such groups as Rammstein and Pet Shop Boys. During the concert in Gdansk, along with two excellent quartets, a string quartet – NeoQuartet and a horn quartet – Hornet Quartet, he will present music from his latest album, which was released by the Berlin label Modern Recordings in February 2022.

Sven Helbig about his new album:
“In my parents’ living room stands an elaborately hand-forged copper kettle – my grandfather’s masterpiece, hammered out of a single piece of copper. Growing up in a family of craftsmen, I have been familiar since early childhood with the attitude of perfecting a thing for its own sake.
The deepening concentration and slow maturing of execution, the craft shares with spiritual rituals, with arts, sports and the sciences. I am touched by the sight of almost ideal expressions of human activity, be it a forged piece, a perfectly build sentence or an athletic performance. I dedicate my album SKILLS to this fascination”.

Fantomina – multimedia production Hewelt / Dziadosz

Galeria w Ruchu, Gdansk (Imperial Shipyard), Popiełuszki Street (in front of WL4 – Milky Peter)

Author’s video installation by Aleksandra Hewelt with music by Bartosz Dziadosz

PHANTOMINA. The work is the result of emerging fascinations related to the development of a personal multimedia theater – a multi-voice visual choir. I multi-stage my images on analog TV screens, drawing on the aesthetics of quick assembly, multiplication, collage, glitch, deformation and reflection. I formulate a statement from my own recordings (pantomimic performance) and using the form of found footage (“the power of chance capable of producing monsters should not be underestimated”).
The images / faces / masks that appear sequentially are a kind of map that should be read as part of a larger transformation story. The Japanese psychic mask is a sign of the harmony of opposites. In this context, the mask appears as reconciliation (“I fear only those contradictions within me that tend to reconcile. If they can even think about shaking hands while standing on opposite banks, it means that the trough of my life is very narrow at this point. My contradictions should seldom hear about myself and know only from stories ”).
The music composed by Bartosz Dziadosz results from harmony, in a way contrasting with the picture focused on the limits of dissonance. At the same time, similar to the painting, it has its roots in the experiment. Selective music tracks from various sources overlap to form the whole composition. The sounds that complement the music are the result of found footage editing treatments and come from films, mainly exploring the mask theme.
